Day 87: Bay of Many Coves Campsite to Davies Bay Campsite (1734-1765)
Friday, February 24
I slept in until 7 even though I had wanted to get up around 6:30. But we still got packed up by a decent time and said goodbye to the couple from Arizona. We packed plenty of water because we heard that there might not be water at the next campground.
The insects on this trail have been incredible. The seccadas are huge, maybe four inches long. When they all get going they almost sound like a crackling fire.
We passed a beautiful lookout and made it to Black Rock Campsite for a snack break. They ended up having water in the tank there. We hiked in the hot sun and made it to a World War Memorial and walked past the turnoff for Cowshed Bay Campsite.
The three kilometers past the turnoff were the most difficult of the day. The combined uphill climb and scorching sun had me drenched in sweat. I probably looked like I had just climbed out of a swimming pool.
At the top of the climb there was a beautiful viewpoint with picnic tables in the sun or a shaded bench below. As we were taking a break, two cyclists went by us and stopped for a moment to take a picture of the view.
The landscapes all day were amazing. Only ocean water and green fingers of land as far as the eye could see.
Sara and I met up at one last viewpoint and then it was a nice 4 kilometer walk downhill to Davies Bay Campsite. We set up our tents, made dinner and got ready for bed.
It was a long and hard day, but it was beautiful and we had cell phone reception most of the day. Tomorrow we'll be in Havelock!
