Day 9: hitched to Kerikeri
When I woke this morning my feet were still hurting from my blisters, so I decided to see if anyone from the campground could give me a ride into Kerikeri (and 8 hour tramp but a 25 minute drive). The first person I asked was so nice! He and his wife, both from Scotland, had been traveling around the country and were traveling with another couple they were friends with.
When we had left the Campsite in the morning, the shower and water had stopped working and we all thought it was odd because there had been so much rain. I also had tried to use a kitchen appliance and couldn't figure out how to turn the electricity on. It wasn't that important and I assumed I was just missing something. But when we got to Kerikeri it all made sense. The power was out and it was out for a lot of the North Island. Someone has shot at a power line or something like that.
They decided what they were going to do and I started walking to find a backpackers with an open bed. Hone Heke Backpackers was fully booked but then I walked to KeriCental Backpackers and they had a bed available. Yay!
A few hours later Curly showed up and we shared trail stories and went to the supermarket.
I couldn't get my bounce box from the post office today because of the power outage so I'll have to get it tomorrow.
